Musings of an Old Irish American of Dubious Distinction
Published on April 5, 2008 By orthocross In Object Desktop

Just a minute ago, I attempted to renew my Object Desktop Network subscription for another year.

Rather than giving me the renewal price, the purchase form told me my purchase would be full-price ($49.95US).

I've been renewing my subscription every year for several years.  This is the FIRST time I've not been offered the renewal price.

I went as far as to review the purchase, just before I was to finalize it.  Still no renewal price ANYWHERE on the purchase form.

Also, I started this process from within SDC.  I was STILL not directed to a renewal form, just the normal purchase form, which had NOTHING on it about renewals.

Additionally, I was signed into SDC, I had entered my key, which told me I was ok till May 19, 2008, and had an active "Renew?" button, which did send me to the Store (albeit extremely slowly on my 12Mbps connection.)

Ok, I was able to purchase the renewal.  However, there is a NEW link I've never seen before: it is a link to "Impulse", and the directions say to install this and add my key.  This is NEW for me.  Is this a REQUIREMENT to receive decent download spees from Stardock?

I've been installing the apps I use (IconPackager,, WB6, SS6Pro, Deskscapes (for Vista), and Keyboard Launchpad) for over an hour now, and Deskscapes is STILL downloading (64% complete, at dial-up speeds -- and I have a 12Mbps connection.)  This is almost unforgiveable.  Get this speed up, please...

PLease help me to straighten this out?

My reply:
I already did that. Still extremely slow downloads (dialup speeds on my 12Mbps pipe!!!)
It's too bad that the LINK in SDC to renew my subscription didn't send me to the link you posted in the first place. Instead, it sent me to the "New" Purchases page.

This is NOT good!!! It can lead unsuspecting users, who have every right to renew for the lower cost, to think that they MUST purchase the entire suite at MSRP, rather than the upgrade price.
Additionally, I had initially attempted to renew via the full purchase page, and had removed the purchase from my cart completely before I read your post.

However, when I went to purchase the renewal using your link, both the renewal AND the full price were on my purchase form. This is ALSO unfortunate.

These unfortunate incidents COULD be used as a reason to have the Store investigated for fraud. But I do realize that somehow, the full price item had somehow failed to be removd from my shopping cart when I removed it previously, so I don't really believe that Stardock is somehow defrauding its customers. But a weaker person might. Please, Stardock, fix these problems?

In the end . .you got your renewal at the renewal price, right?  Weren't over-charged (after removing the full price sub from your cart??

Impulse

While not technically part of Object Desktop 2008, Impulse will debut with it. Impulse is Stardock's next-generation distribution platform. Existing users can still use Stardock Central if they want, but Impulse will be available to easily manage not just software but content as well.

I thought Windowblinds was included with Object Desktop subscription, how come it's asking for a separate activation code?

did you have it installed as separate purchase previously?
